Reducing stress and preventing burnout among healthcare professionals in EU hospitals: KEEPCARING is supported by renowned partners from health, industry and research and funded by the European Union with a total of 6.4 million Euro.
Nuromedia GmbH from Cologne announces the successful start of the KEEPCARING research project. The four-year project started on 1 July 2024 and will run until 30 June 2028.
The project consists of a consortium of 20 partners from 11 countries and is funded by the European Union with €6.4 million as part of the Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Programme ‘Resilience and Mental Well-being of the Health and Care Workforce’. In addition to Nuromedia GmbH, renowned universities, research institutions and partners from the fields of health innovation, psychology, AI and digital health solutions are supporting the KEEPCARING project.
Background of the project
Healthcare professionals, especially those working in hospital settings, face extraordinary levels of stress and pressure. Surgical pathways, in particular, are intense, with long hours, complex procedures, and life-or-death decisions becoming a regular part of the job. Over time, these factors contribute to a rise in burnout, stress-related illnesses, and high turnover rates among healthcare workers, impacting not only the professionals but also the quality of patient care.
The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified these stressors, revealing systemic vulnerabilities in healthcare systems across Europe. While some interventions to improve wellbeing and resilience exist, there is still a significant gap in understanding what combination of solutions works best, especially in high-stress, surgical environments. Many healthcare workers continue to experience job dissatisfaction, mental exhaustion, and disengagement from their roles due to the lack of comprehensive support.
Aims of the project
KEEPCARING aims to (re)build the well-being and resilience of healthcare staff in EU hospitals in the surgical field, to promote entry and retention in the workplace by systematically exploring factors and signals of occupational stress and novel solutions to mitigate it, and to jointly create a multi-faceted, non-digital, digital and AI-powered solution package to prevent burnout in (prospective) healthcare professionals at individual, team and organisational level.
The project focuses on reducing stress and preventing burnout among healthcare workers through the development of innovative, co-created solutions. KEEPCARING combines non-digital, digital and AI-driven approaches to address individual, team and organisational stress factors, especially in surgical departments. Our solutions aim to build a healthier workforce, which ultimately leads to better patient care.
In addition to Nuromedia GmbH, renowned universities, research institutions and partners from the fields of health innovation, psychology, AI and digital health solutions are supporting the KEEPCARING project.
