Fighting crime and terrorism with big data and AI: NUROMEDIA launches international PRESERVE project

By 8. October 2024No Comments

Privacy-friendly big data platform for criminal investigations: PRESERVE is supported by renowned partners in the fields of research and security and is funded by the European Union with a total of €5.39 million.

Nuromedia GmbH from Cologne announces the start of the international research project PRESERVE. The project started on 01.09.2024 and has a duration of 36 months.

PRESERVE is funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe programme with €5.39 million and will be realised by 14 partners from 9 countries, consisting of companies, research institutions and universities.

PRESERVE aims to develop an innovative and privacy-friendly decision support system for European law enforcement agencies that utilises big data and AI technologies to effectively fight crime and terrorism. The proposed system integrates Federated Learning, User and Entity Behaviour Analytics (UEBA) and other Big Data and AI techniques to monitor data from social networks, deep and shallow web information and police databases in a secure, collaborative, privacy-conscious and ethical way.

The main goal is to support law enforcement agencies in the fight against cybercrime and terrorism by identifying key communities and users involved in activities such as hate speech, child sexual abuse, terrorism or drug trafficking and using this information to better allocate police resources.

PRESERVE uses federated learning, a decentralised approach to machine learning that enables the training of models on distributed data sources while maintaining data privacy. Working with multiple LEAs across Europe, PRESERVE will combine data from social networks, deep and flat web information and police databases to analyse large volumes of spatial and temporal data related to criminal activity to identify patterns and correlations to enable better management of police resources in critical areas.

In the PRESERVE project, NUROMEDIA is responsible for the ‘development of the big data analytics platform for the prevention of cybercrime’. NUROMEDIA´S tasks also include data procurement, data collection and data management. Further information about the PRESERVE project: https://www.nuromedia.com/project/preserve/
